What diseases or conditions can Oriental Medicine treat?
Almost all aspects of ill-health can be either rectified, improved or controlled (with a few exceptions). Oriental Medicine focuses on treating the underlying cause of disease because, without a cause, there can be no symptoms.
CONDITIONS THAT CAN BE TREATED INCLUDE:
WHAT ARE THE MAIN CAUSES OF OUR HEALTH PROBLEMS?
Assuming we are born healthy, lifestyle choices or circumstance is the main reason our bodies become unbalanced, e.g work, sport, diet, emotional stress, etc.
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE AND MOXIBUSTION WORK?
We focus on the functions of the organs and meridians in the body rather than the structure (which is the role of a surgeon).
Acupuncture and moxibustion treatment aim to restore and strengthen the body’s natural ability to heal itself. This is achieved by regulating the flow of Qi, Blood and Fluids in the body using specific meridian points and techniques. This approach can also prevent future problems.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JAPANESE AND CHINESE ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture originates in China. Over thousands of years, many styles have emerged. There are a number of different styles in Japan, as well as in Korea. What I practise (commonly called Japanese Meridian Therapy), is not a style as such, but is actually 'Classical Acupuncture,' i.e. based on the Ancient Chinese Classic texts.
HOW DO YOU DETERMINE THE POINTS AND TECHNIQUES TO USE?
Pulse diagnosis, together with palpation, visual assessment and patient information are gathered. This determines the points and techniques to be used – and yes, acupuncture works on everyone and is suitable for all ages.
WHAT IS MOXIBUSTION?
Moxibustion has a number of techniques that involve the burning of a herb (mugwort) on acupoints or local areas. It has a powerful therapeutic effect on blood and can also disperse or add heat as needed.
WHAT DOES CUPPING THERAPY DO?
The full name of the therapy is actually 'cup drawing', meaning that something causing a problem that is stuck deeper inside the body can be drawn up to the surface where it can disperse. This is commonly a deep bruise (which is what we often see after treatment), but can also be stagnant heat or fluids.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU BE TREATED AND HOW LONG DOES IT USUALLY TAKE FOR RESULTS?
Acute problems can be treated 2 or 3 times a week but are often quickly fixed. Chronic problems are typically treated weekly. A number of factors determine the number of treatments that are required- how long you have had the problem, your age, is the problem genetic and is your lifestyle contributing to the problem. Results are sometimes surprisingly fast in some cases, even for chronic problems.
